If Democrat leaders in Congress are bent on making a political statement, then they need to send me this unacceptable bill as quickly as possible when they come back.

But, nevertheless, I strongly agree that we've got to continue to make it clear to the Iraqi government that this is -- the solution to Iraq, an Iraq that can govern itself, sustain itself and defend itself, is more than a military mission -- precisely the reason why I sent more troops into Baghdad, to be able to provide some breathing space for this democratically-elected government to succeed.

The Dreaded Cauldron of Chaos

What I'm worried about is that we leave before the mission is done -- and that is a country that is able to govern, sustain and defend itself -- and that Iraq becomes a cauldron of chaos which will embolden extremists, whether they be Shia or Sunni extremists; which would enable extremists to have safe haven from which to plot attacks on America; which could provide new resources for an enemy that wants to harm us.

I believe that Bush thinks that if he says something often enough it will turn out to be true. There's no other explanation for statements like "Iraq is a very important part of securing the homeland."

Ignoring the fascistic sounds of "securing the homeland" as language, and focusing on the idea of preventing future attacks on America, there is no way that this statement of his could possibly make sense. When people think about making America safe, they think about our borders, things that come into our country (freight, for instance), things that are already in our country. A nation on the other side of the world is not a part of that any way you look at it with a rational mind.
