I have more the sense of someone desperately casting about and losing control of the situation itself. Even hypocrites can get in over their heads. Indeed, in a more nuts-and-bolts strategic sense McCain has really gotten himself into a hole because the campaign he's been running has almost entirely been premised on the claim that you should be scared of an Obama presidency. Not that McCain, if he'd run a very different campaign, couldn't have run on issue disagreements with Obama. But right now if you take away fear of Obama becoming president, there's almost no reason not to vote for him since McCain has basically conceded the issue agenda to Obama. If you look at every poll for months, voters are dying for change. Fear of Obama is the only thing keeping him from leaving McCain in the dust. Take that away and McCain's done.

Well, and this shit is OLD. I mean, I'm sorry, but in part of what kept getting Bush close enough to call it in elections is that people were just knocked flat by how brazen his bullshit was, how little it had to do with anything, and how obedient the majority of residents in the right-wing loony bin were in pushing his campaign's crap into the U-bend of the toilet with all their strength.

I mean, I dunno about you, that was something I'd certainly never seen before. Ten minutes after Kerry gave Bush such a whacking in the third debate that all we could talk about was what we'd wear to the inaugural ball, all anybody on CNN could talk about was how rude it was of Kerry to say "lesbian." It was breathtaking.

Now? Now, we've seen it before. It's lost the capacity to shock or thrill or impress us. I think the best example of this was the Palin pick. Sure, couple weeks there, looked like she was gonna be their savior, but once people realized all she had to offer was the same old tired stuff Bush had offered them, with (if this is possible) even less intelligence and charm behind it, she faded. Everybody had seen this before.

Today I wrote about the guys who just come right out and say, "Obama is scary. We need to DO something!" and what we should do about it.

If someone just says, "Get 'em" about Obama and then someone does, should the person who suggested it get in trouble?
