Kathleen Parker Has Left The Building

Exited right, gotten into her car, and sped off into the sunset as fast as she can drive:

Religious conservatives become defensive at any suggestion that they've had something to do with the GOP's erosion. And, though the recent Democratic sweep can be attributed in large part to a referendum on Bush and the failing economy, three long-term trends identified by Emory University's Alan Abramowitz have been devastating to the Republican Party: increasing racial diversity, declining marriage rates and changes in religious beliefs.

Suffice it to say, the Republican Party is largely comprised of white, married Christians. Anyone watching the two conventions last summer can't have missed the stark differences: One party was brimming with energy, youth and diversity; the other felt like an annual Depends sales meeting.

With the exception of Miss Alaska, of course.

Even Sarah Palin has blamed Bush policies for the GOP loss. She's not entirely wrong, but she's also part of the problem. Her recent conjecture about whether to run for president in 2012 (does anyone really doubt she will?) speaks for itself:

"I'm like, okay, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is.... And if there is an open door in (20)12 or four years later, and if it's something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."

Let's do pray that God shows Alaska's governor the door.

If she thinks she got hate mail after the last time she tangled with assholes ...

But seriously, this is the same sort of thing. They're just NOW figuring out that keeping a beaten, starving, semi-rabid Siberian tiger chained to their back door and going out each day to taunt it with a chihuahua on a stick is a bad idea? Just NOW? After it's bitten their arms off? Now they're looking at the bloody stumps going, "Huh. That was dumb of me?" Now they figure this out.

I predict in about a week Parker will write another column about all the hate mail she got calling her every name in the book from supposed "Christians" and say that she is very shocked that people who call themselves Christians can behave in such an un-Christian manner. Anybody wanna take that bet? Same as the MoDo convention bet: Five bucks.

Of course, she's still a Republican:

But, like it or not, we are a diverse nation, no longer predominantly white and Christian. The change Barack Obama promised has already occurred, which is why he won.

Among Jewish voters, 78 percent went for Obama. Sixty-six percent of under-30 voters did likewise.

We'd have won this time if it wasn't for all you meddling bi-racial Jewish kids!

Every night, I drop to my atheist knees and pray for not just a schism, but a full-on splintering of the Republican party into a series of tiny fringe parties that have to try to build coalitions in order to achieve any office above dog catcher.

A - that brings to mind a post you made a while back about the GOP getting in bed with those whackjobs. One of your classic visuals about realizing you're in the back of a van with a bunch of batshit crazies and they're in control of the situation...

Parker's about to get whacked by those very same nutcases.

Ah, A, you didn't include the ooga booga comment? Cuz that MADE MY MORNING.

Any chance we can convince Tommy to wade into the comments at WaPo on that and report back?

And lets not forget that the "christian right" is only a small but highly vocal group within the Christian religion. They've been highly successful at pushing their agenda (I think because a lot of folks just don't want to waste the time arguing with them). But in pushing their agenda, they've also pushed a lot of Christians away from the Church (Using Church here as any Christian Denomination or Congregation).

Damn, I wish my grandpa could see those Jewish voter stats:

http://humidcity.com/2008/10/19/oh-no-it-aint-so-grandpa/

Of course, he may question THEIR validity...

Plus, I guess those election results in Obama's favor from us Jews mean that more Great Schleps are in order. Besides, who's gonna teach the Prez-Elect some Yiddish?

sheeple are finally over that little millineum thing.

The total number of Jewish voters in the US is small and possibly insignificant. The bulk of Jewish voters are in Florida and New England AND are liberal democrats. They don't figure into the right wing at all.

Muffler,

Don't forget the hanging chads and butterfly ballots that let a community in Florida (composed of a lot of older Jews who remember the Shoa "up front and personal") go overwhelmingy for Pat Buchanan.

One of the big inputs which led to Shrub stealing the election.

Liprap -

Charismatic Judaism ?????

Holy cow, I can't believe I never saw it before. Sarah Silverman in glasses = Velma!!!

MapleStreet, that sort of Judaism of which you speak is probably best illustrated using Tony Curtis as an example, or Kirk Douglas....

8-)

But actually, the best example of biracial charismatic Judaism might be Lenny Kravitz...
