I wish I could say it wasn't just racism, Athenae, but you know and I know that at the heart of all fear is the most basic racism there is: fear of Other.

Systemic injustice - oppression of the many by the wealthy few, a system that is allowed by our indifference.

And that's all I can say, other than I like A's putting it into the example of children "kids just as nice as yours, just as deserving as yours, just as blameless as yours trying to learn with parkas on because the boilers don't work."

That's what this is.

And THAT'S why I'm a socialist. That rich witch might as well have said, "Let them eat cake."

Sing it A. Great post.

Yes MA'AM!

butbutbut they might see black people. LIVE black people.

andandand there might be potholes.

why not get the kids mini hardhats.

This reminds me of a certain private school that will remain unnamed, where the parents didn't want the recipient of their kid's Christmas present project for the disadvantaged to go to a battered woman's shelter because they didn't want the children to find out that some women get beat up by their partners. Feh.

I wonder if the kids have more sense than their parents or if they are already indoctrinated into the way of their parents.

It might be helpful to find a place where all the K-2nd graders could go to school together, and then have the 3rd and 4th graders from both schools together for the duration of the construction.

What would be the result of that for the kids? Parents? District?

Yeah, I agree with you that it isn't just racism, it's also class bigotry. Here in my town, go to anybody who lives in the west end, and ask them what they think of when you say "East of Adelaide," and watch the reaction. (It'll be something like, "Ew, bad, dangerous, gross, nasty!") That was true when my parents were little children, and if there were more than a handful of nonwhite people in this town back then, I'd be bloody surprised. (We didn't really have nonwhite people then, we just had "ethnics," if you know what I mean.)

Nowadays, one of the biggest Muslim enclaves in the entire city (new immigrants) is in the west end, surrounding what was once a prosperous suburban shopping mall. Funnily enough, the owner has refused to renew a lot of the tenants' leases, so it's now a suburban wasteland. Coincidence? I suspect not. (On the other hand, they may just be gearing up to rebuild the place yet again, as they seem to do at about 15 year intervals, and it's time again.)
