Athenae: This shouldn't be higher math but just plain arithmetic: the quality of the services we receive is directly related to the level of revenue collected by government agencies. There are services the public sector provides that are can't be bought privately. I would rather my dollars go for educating our children than for putting another stall on my garage. And here's more arithmetic: given the same tax base, revenue goes up when rates go up...duh. Good rant, although your piece several years ago on Kathleen Parker is still the gold standard. (Poor Kathleen was shocked when she discovered how venomous some of her right wing constituency was when she accidentally veered off the reservation.)

I love when you point this stuff out.
Yesterday I wondered why the progressives don't focus on going after Pete Peterson, the Koch Brothers and Murdoch for their various law breaking. Because you just know people who hate taxes as much as they do are breaking the law somewhere. And if you do it right not only does the government get to collect taxes from these folks you could get a part of the revenue collected. It's a win, win, win, win.

You support the law,
you help fund the government,
you help fund liberal causes,
you help defund the people who attack us and our views.

These guys are the access of Evil to liberals and they are trying everyday to make 98 percent of American's lives worse.
will they scream? Of course, but which one of them started attacking us? Who is trying to take food from the mouths of your grandma? Not me.
Nobody is talking about pitch folks and torches, just good ol' investigations into OSHA violations (Koch Oil's got 'em) SEC violations (Newscorp) and generic IRS tax evasion(Peterson).

If you are unemployed and have time on your hands, why not see if you can use your internet, accounting, detectiveing skill on the biggest funders of the people trying to make our lives miserable?

"There are services the public sector provides that are can't be bought privately."

The Right rejects this premise -- at least they say they do, while they go on free-riding.

If I were to make a prediction, its that the Republicans will go down in flames faster and harder than the Democrats did over the last two years. Don't give these guys too much shit -- they're Obama's best chance at re-election :-)

Meanwhile in other news:

(This from the BBC headline story on the Gates announcement of Pentagon Budget "cuts")

"The major weapons programmes cuts are likely to encounter opposition from US congressmen and senators in whose constituencies the arms are manufactured."

""I'm not happy," House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard McKeon told reporters. He said the cuts were greater than defence companies had been expecting."

heh. Howard McKeon-R-reprepsenting the military industrial complex district of wtf EVER CA

One hundred billion a year by closing the offshore tax shelters.
But hey! That would prolly be called a tax increase too.

If people had jobs and were paid a living wage the amount they pay in taxes would increase!!Oh noes, that would be a tax increase!
