Just when you think they couldn't slither any lower, along comes Mark Kirk as merely the latest to demonstrate that, for the GOP, setting the bar means digging a hole. A deep hole:
"The consensus behind the climate change bill collapsed and then further deteriorated with the personal and political collapse of Vice President [Al] Gore," Kirk said in a brief interview last week.
What a weenie.
While Gore is a politician and statesman, not a scientist, he HAS done his homework (and behaves like the grown up he is). Anyway, as he notes here, the major storm (and, for us, sleet/freezing rain today -- fun fun) is fully in line with what you might see as a consequence of global warming/climate change.
But Mark Kirk doesn't like him. So there.

The "personal collapse" of Al Gore? That's a stretch. For "personal and political collapse," Kirk might want to look a bit closer to home, at the sort of people who have been representing Illinois in politics recently. Blagojevich, anyone?

I see that FEMA is getting involved in the coming crisis in the Midwest and Northeast. This should be a great intervention.
I don't worry too much about the Republicans actually, they are just closet Democrats without a semblance of compassion. This will become more apparent as gasoline is delivered to the front lines in Afghanistan at $500 per gallon, while heating oil supplies rocket up as the speculators squeeze a couple of more dollars in price and manipulate supplies in the US.
Of course, the price of fuel, gasoline and food is not included in the calculations for inflation. Food will be the real deal breaker. The real reason for the unrest in the northern African countries is that the price of food is so high that their people cannot afford an adequate diet.
So, no, you won't have enough to pay the bills. Big deal, Mr Gore is, I am sure, a real man. His father was a crooked politician and his wife is an heiress of a vast fortune. Since they are rich, they can afford to take a relaxed view of coming problems.
The only positive thing that the Gores did for me personally was when Tipper started a ruckus in the mid 80s about the lyrics in music? Remember that? I only had a couple of albums that were on the list, but I went out and bought the rest of the list immediately. Changed my musical taste drastically.

Illinois Dems lost a winnable seat by running a young failed banker as the fresh face of change. Now we have to live with Kirk for 6 years. What a mess. If Pat Quinn, career nudge, could win Governor following the Blago mess then Dems should have held the seat. I'm more mad at Schakowsky and Obama for pushing Alexi Giannoulias than I am at Kirk. Scott Baio had more fucking gravitas in Charles in Charge.

One of the great tragedies of our current political system is that the politicians and corporate media bobbleheads know less about why it snows than your average fifth grader.
And the tides, too.

I have to believe that if only Al Gore would lose 40 pounds, the global climate crisis could be averted. The man just doesn't know how important his diet is to the world.
