Good morning, all - it's been a quiet week in Freeperville, and I thought I would have to do another Putrid Potpourri Edition, when suddenly, a gift from the gods whistled out of the sky and fell into my pond with the resounding smack of a dozen King Logs.

If Sarah is flirting, I was seduced a long time ago! For everyone who doesn't want Romney, this is huge!

A huge horselaugh, maybe.

It's only in the modern era that Presidential nominations have been locked up before most American voters even tuned in.

You need a helmet with a flashing red light and "Hopelessly out of touch" stenciled on it. Most "conservatives" only want to go back to 1956 or so.  These yahoos want to go all the way back to 1948 and Thomas Dewey.  How did that work out for you guys, by the way?

So this year, for the nation, the Republican Primary is kind of a return to older times, when all Americans counted, not just the few power brokers. The race has been a very rich blue blood from New England ( where he would not carry one state in the general election ) and a group of three, Newt, Rick and Ron scrambling for the 60 plus percent of Republicans who won't be bought!

If that means 60% of GOPers who won't be voting, I can live with that.

And now, a new card is thrown into the game,

Sarah Palin coming off the bench to be the choice at a divided GOP Convention! And with just a hint, she will stir the pot and drive the media nuts! Hurrah for Sarah.

In one of my most recent columns I told you about a conversation I had with a friend who had attended CPAC. He told me that Sarah had been the closing speaker, and the best. And he said, she had indicated she was not out of the game, and he even predicted she would be the horse to mount for the General election race.

 

Wow.

That's the only verb that describes this possiblity. Did the Governor from Alaska out fox the pundits, the consultants, and the power elite in the GOP to dance right around all the murderous press that she would have had to endure?

Because she certainly won't have to deal with any press should she snag the nomination. Uh huh.

Looks like this lady is not someone to play with.

I have been a Palin supporter from the beginning. For me, she was the choice by lengths. None of the rest of the candidates have her charisma, her grit, her unique character. For America, in this time of crisis and cross roads, there is only one person who can truly change the course of the ship of state! And that's Sarah.

So is this for real?

We can't know. She did not hint towards jumping in now. She hinted that she could be the one to pick in a brokered convention.

But this does provide a ray of hope. It provides one more reason NOT to vote for Romney. But it also provides a reason to go to the polls and vote for anybody other than Romney.

These bozos are actually "Operation Chaos"ing themselves. God can't love me this much.

It does provide a real reason to be involved. For the grass roots, make your choice from Newt, Rick or Ron but do it and be there on Primary Day. Don't let Romney buy you, or win because of apathy.

America does not have one flat tire. We have four flat tires, a blown engine, no battery, and a leaky gas tank where fuel is running ...and may ignite if it hits something electric or hot.

Ignite, sweet prince!

We need someone with a renewed vision of the old America. Yes, the old America. The one that put a man on the moon. The one that on Decemeber 25, 1991 won the half century Cold War liberating 500 million souls in 13 nations! We need the old America that when I was born was unquestionably the wealthiest, most powerful, most successful nation in the entire world. And we need someone who knows why all that happened.

Huge revenues from a top marginal tax rate of 90%?

Sarah proved in Alaska she could be an executive. She went against corruption in her own party...and beat the oil companies at the same time! In her third year as governor her approval ratings in Alaska were over eighty percent!!!! 80 percent!

You're kinda glossing over what they were after that (and now), aren't you?

A new Alaska Poll released today shows 61% of Alaskans have a "very unfavorable" or "somewhat unfavorable" opinion of Palin, a former governor and the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee.

Thirty-six percent view Palin positively, according to the survey by Dittman Research and Communications

So... we wait. But now, on the horizon, we see a light. So GOP grass roots, get to the polls, and pick anyone but Mitt!!!

No, not likely.

You just cannot decide at a moment’s notice decide to run for president, especially after publicly denying she would. If she decided tomorrow to do it, she would not find enough support to accomplish this.

She is either better off to stay at Fox news and give the occasional statement of conservatives ideals or run for the House or Senate.

I hear there's a position open at MSNBC.

That has always been my position about her.

Amazing she had no time for CPAC the last four years that they’ve asked her and now she does....she’s trying to play kingmaker.

There was a movie out a few years ago with Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves called the the Devil’s Advocate where Al Pacino who plays the devil says at the end “Vanity my favorite sin of all.” That’s Sarah she can’t live without the spotlight.

Actually during her 20 year in politics, Governor Palin earned her reputation as being a strong leader, a reformer, someone who can take on the establishment and beat them.

That, or a quitter. It was one of those two things.

Since Palin came on the national scene 3 1/2 years ago, she has helped conservatives her bank account make historical gains.

Specifically, the campaign is asking that a number of signatures be struck because postcards sent to those addresses were returned by the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable. However, checking the addresses on the postcards against those on the petitions shows that the Fitzgerald campaign, either purposefully or accidently, misaddressed numerous postcards, making it likely they would be returned.

The very first challenged address (pg. 8) reveals three glaring mistakes made by the campaign. The postcard it sent out was addressed to "Arnold Sodill" of W857 Eipong Terrace, Wisconsin, with no municipality or zip code listed. In fact, the actual petition was signed by "Arnold Wodill" of W8571 Lake George Terrace, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

What a FUCKING CLOWN SHOW. I seriously hope part of the lesson people take from all this, once these people are thrown out on their anti-democratic asses, is that if you want to be evil you'd better be at least halfway competent, because this is just gross.

An official says the U.S. Marine Corps has identified at least two of the four marines in an internet video that purports to depict them urinating on Taliban corpses in Afghanistan. A marine official said Thursday that the four were members of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, which returned to its home base in North Carolina last fall after a tour in Afghanistan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because a criminal investigation is underway. The official said that at least some of the four marines are no longer in that battalion. That is where these guys made their mistake. It’s one thing to what they did but they absolutely knew this guy was filming and went through with it. He told them twice that he was filming it.

Go for it. Just go for it. Burn it all down. Pile everything you've ever said was important to you in the street, douse it in gasoline, and let the blaze light up the sky. 

This puts it all on the table. Republicans and Catholics and Republican Catholics and Republicans who just say they're Catholic and Catholics who are Republican because abortion seems yucky are now all just going to have to say it now. 

They would rather lots and lots of women die from preventable conditions, too many unwanted children, and abortions that should never have to happen, than that they have to put up with the thought that some woman somewhere is making her own decisions regarding who she has sex with and when. 

I got news for a lot of people what think this is some kind of winning argument about religious freedom for Catholics. Catholic women have memories of the battle over the Pill and the issuance of Humanae Vitae the first time around.

For instance, the Belgian bishops stated: "Someone, however, who is competent in the matter under consideration and capable of forming a personal and well-founded judgment--which necessarily presupposes a sufficient amount of knowledge--may, after a serious examination before God, come to other conclusions on certain points. In such a case he has the right to follow his conviction provided that he remains sincerely disposed to continue his inquiry." Of those who arrived at conclusions differ­ent from Humanae Vitae, the Scandinavian bishops stat­ed: "No one should, therefore, on account of such diverg­ing opinions alone, be regarded as an inferior Catholic." The Canadian bishops made a similar statement: ’These Catholics should not be considered, or consider them­selves, shut off from the body of the faithful."

Catholic women remember the woman in the pew next to them in church, dragging 13 children behind her, her husband dead or gone and no help at hand. They remember the neighbor who died in childbirth because her doctor was bound by faith to save her baby at all costs. They remember the relative whose husband defied the hospital's orders to make sure there were no more children, who suffered horribly before the end. They remember their own miscarriages, stillbirths, when God wanted them to have just one more baby, at the age of 45 in 1953.

And those were the married women who wanted the children they had. Those were the ones doing it right, in the eyes of the more conservative bishops and members of the church. That was the fate due the good girls. I don't need to go over what happened to the bad ones, and what we remember about them. 

So go ahead, tell those women that a condom is cause for excommunication. Tell those women that the greatest threat to their liberty is some other lady in their health plan getting the pill for free. Tell those women, who lost their sisters, who lost their aunts, who lost their mothers, who saw the women around them worn out and rubbed down to nothing, that they don't have the right to painlessly, reasonably ensure that they live to care for the family they want. Let's have that fight. Let's haul out all the arguments. 

Let's talk about how God really wants our infant mortality rate to skyrocket. Let's talk about how many women, exactly, God wants dead. Let's make adherence to a rule of the modern world the be-all and end-all test of who is a true believer. That's never gone horribly wrong before. 

Let's have that fight, because there's no way it goes the way the bishops think it's going to go. This is the late Cardinal Avery Dulles, writing in 1968: 

In view of the American tradition of freedom and pluralism, it would be a serious mistake to use the encyclical as a kind of Catholic loyalty test. Nothing could so quickly snuff out the spirit of per­sonal responsibility, which has done so much to invigorate American Catholicism in the past few years.

Nothing could be more discouraging to young people and intellectuals, upon whom the future of our Church so greatly depends. Nothing could be more destructive of the necessary autonomy of Catholic universities and journals, which have begun to prosper so well. He could have been speaking directly to the bishops and their power-hungry enablers in Congress today. Have that fight. Go ahead. You won't like the outcome. I don't know what's more offensive, the idea that there's this conspiracy of fake rape out there on the part of evil bitches who just want to abort their children, or the idea that the majority of women who are pregnant as a result of rape all just put it out of their heads until they get the silly notion to have themselves a quick and easy abortion. 

For all that movement anti-abortion people like to hold up pictures of bloody, violent body parts at intersections, they don't really seem to understand the reality of what that procedure does to a woman's body. What an abortion at 28 weeks would look like, feel like, leave behind. The idea that it would somehow be taken lightly, the idea that somebody would do that out of anything but medical necessity or desperation, is such an condescending assault on reason that it makes my vision go white. 

They really do think women are children: flighty, silly, unable to take responsibility for their actions, unable to know their own physical and mental limitations, so unaware of their own bodies and what happens inside them. They really do think that given the option, women would just do this at random. That they'd take those risks as if they were nothing. That they'd look at their bodies, turned enemy, and be able to go on about their days without thinking about it. That they'd be that stupid. That they'd be like that at all.

Watching this ongoing pig fuck would be amusing if it wasn't so predictable and sad. 

Look, once and for all, let's settle what happens when you get in bed with factually challenged wingnut lunatics. This happens. I have seldom seen a clusterfuck play out this quickly or intensely, and I watch this kind of stuff like it's my job. 

The apperance of political neutrality is utterly critical for a charity like Komen. Conservative women get breast cancer. Liberal women get breast cancer. Politically ignorant as hell women get breast cancer. From a fundraising perspective, if not from a human-decency perspective, you don't want to only fish in half the lake. You want to throw your net over the whole damn thing, and taking sides in the abortion debate isn't just not doing that, it's setting the net on fire and shooting a hole in your boat. 

(And can we just talk for one minute about the entirety of women's health being defined as their boobs and their babies, wanted and otherwise? I admit to some privilege here, as I'm not at high risk for breast cancer. The things that do risk my health -- heart disease, brain tumors, lung ailments of various kinds -- aren't nearly as fun to talk about on the evening news, because you can't say the word "breast" in relation to them. Not without sound like some kind of masturbating pervert, anyway.) 

I am tired of organizations that could be doing enormous good in the lives of others choosing instead to cave to fear and shame, either out of genuine ideological agreement or simple cowardice in the face of ten angry letters from assholes who have no idea what they're talking about. Look at the cost, people. Just look. I'm a dumb girl who went to state school and I could have told you how this was going to go. Anybody functionally awake in the world in the past 15 years could tell how you this was going to go. LISTEN.

Newt Gingrich meets Brad Pitt

Newt wants Brad to play him on the big screen. Guess the film's title will be Newt's Delusion.

In an interview with a Florida radio station, just before his defeat by Romney in the primary, Gingrich confessed that, if a movie was ever made about his life, he saw Brad Pitt in the role.

Speaking to the Rich Stevens Radio Show on Ft Lauderdale, Florida station 850 WFTL, Gingrich admitted there might be one or two minor problems – "he's thinner, he's better looking, he's younger" – but that would be no artistic obstacle. "If you're going to go for it, you gotta relax and let your imagination soar."

In fact, Gingrich, 68, is two decades older than the 48-year-old Pitt, and the two appear to have almost nothing in common. Pennsylvania-born Gingrich has been a career politician since running for Congress in 1974 as a Republican; Pitt, born in Oklahoma but raised in Missouri, has regularly topped world's sexiest man polls and is a noted Hollywood liberal.

I'm surprised Newt didn't say Denzel in order to pander to the black Goopers who convene in a phone booth at CPAC...

Santorum, himself the father of a child with a rare genetic disorder, compared buying drugs to buying an iPad, and said demand would determine the cost of medical therapies.

"People have no problem paying $900 for an iPad," Santorum said, "but paying $900 for a drug they have a problem with - it keeps you alive. Why? Because you've been conditioned to think health care is something you can get without having to pay for it."

Right. You shallow kids who expect everyone to take care of you so you can buy an iPad, you suck. Get a helmet and pay for your drugs like a grownup.

I really ... I mean, on the one hand, of course these rich assholes don't have any idea what it's like to pay for meds with money that would otherwise be going to food or rent, but ... THESE RICH ASSHOLES DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA, PERIOD, OKAY. I was recently on a course of various drugs that, together, cost about $500. That was WITH Cadillac insurance, mind. Five hundred bucks. One drug alone was $150. 

As a one-time thing, that was bad enough. Monthly? For the rest of my life? That would have killed me financially. That would prevent me from doing anything over and above the basic necessities. Forget holding off on buying an iPad. I'd have held off buying MEAT. And I'm financially pretty lucky, at least relatively these days. What if that had come during 2007, our Summer of Double Unemployment? It would still be on the credit card, at some 18 percent interest by now. 

I just ... we alway have these dipshit polls, right, about which candidate you think really understands your problems? I always thought those were stupid on some level, like, I want the president to understand EVERYBODY'S problems, not just mine because that's selfish. But I'm coming to realize that the true polling question ought to be WHICH PRESIDENT SEEMS TO INHABIT THE SAME PLANET YOU DO, and the answer on the Republican side is pretty definitively none of them.

Mitt Hispanic?

Is the whitest man in American public life suddenly Hispanic? No but Fox News Latino is toeing the Murdochian line and asking whether Romney is the "First Gringo-Latin President." This is, of course, poppycock, piffle and other p words that I can't think of. In his eagerness to pander (another p word)  Mitt keeps mentioning his family's "emigrating from Mexico."

Here are the basic facts as I understand them: one of Romney's ancestors went to Mexico because he was polygamous and Mexican officials were even more corrupt than the Americans so they didn't enforce their own laws against plural marriage. In 1912, young George Romney and his family fled the Mexican revolution because they feared getting their rich white heads cut off. So much for Latinness or Hispanicosity. It's all part of the Mittster's pretense that he's a man of the people.

Past inherited rich guy Presidents such as FDR and JFK made fun of their own backgrounds but, of course, their policies benefited poor people. Imagine FDR saying "I'm not concerned about the very poor." I'm grateful that Romney has still got his gaffe machine mojo working...

Finally, a word to the MSM: the term Hispanic is meaningless. The main Latino groups in the US and A have nothing in common politically. Since the MSM excels at oversimplification, I'm going to do likewise: Cuban and Central American voters lean GOP and tend to be conservative.  Mexican and Puerto Rican voters lean Democratic and tend to be liberal. Try asking a rich Cubano in Miami if he has anything in common with a Mexican grape picker in California. If you do I hope they aren't drinking a beverage, spit takes can be very messy...

One of the interesting sidebars of last night’s debate was the fiery exchange between Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich over the latter’s “grandiose” ideas and unstable leadership style. During the course of this rhetorical dustup during which Gingrich took Santorum’s bait and took credit for the Reagan presidency, the defeat of the Soviet Union and the 1994 Republican Congressional victory. While the first two claims are the stuff of self-satire, Gingrich is surely entitled to puff his chest at the memory of his role in the GOP’s taking back the House for the first time in 40 years.

Alexander Burns of Politico recals that in 1992 the New York Times reported about Gingrich’s involvement in the banking scandal. Apparently, Gingrich was kiting checks along with the worst Democratic scofflaws. His 22 overdrafts including a $9,463 check to the IRS was a major issue in his re-election campaign that year and nearly cost him his seat which the then House Republican Minority held by a razor-thin margin of 982 votes that fall.

Santorum was wrong to imply that the Georgian didn’t get involved in exposing the House Bank scandal because he lacked the moxie to mix up with the Democratic poobahs. In fact, as Gingrich pointed out, he had already played the lead role in taking down former House Speaker Jim Wright. The real reason for Gingrich’s silence was far worse: conflict of interest.

Gingrich said nothing about the bank while Santorum stuck his neck out because he was as guilty as any of the Democrats who were caught bouncing checks at the bank at the taxpayers’ expense.
That information leaves us wondering why, if Santorum was going to bring up the scandal in the course of an attack on Gingrich, he pulled his punch. Wouldn’t it have been far more devastating to rightly accuse Gingrich of complicity in the scandal instead of wrongly accusing him of cowardice?

Newt Gingrich seems to be channeling either Jackie Gleason or Ray Bradbury right now. Personally, I think a lunar base would be awesome in a sci-fi, Trekkie kinda way but the Apollo program, uh, took off when the economy was purring like a cat with a Harley implant. I wouldn't, however, object if we sent Newt to the moon: he could be the Lunar Kaiser instead of a mere candidate pandering to Florida's Space Coast.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is Wisconsin state senator Glenn Grothman (R-Lead Industry). Why is he the duck-fucker of today, you ask? Simple. Just look here:

The bill, introduced only last week, is moving at breakneck speed, getting a hastily scheduled public hearing on Thursday. Introduced by Sen. Glenn Grothman, R-West Bend, the proposal also apparently has the blessing of Republican leadership. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has signed on as a co-sponsor.

"When a court does something that's as outrageous as (the Thomas ruling), when they retroactively tell businesses that were producing paint in 1900 or 1910 that not only can you be liable for damages ... but you have to be liable for any paint produced by any paint company in the United States in 1900, obviously you can't operate commerce with that type of decision made," Grothman said at the hearing.

Business interests were also enraged by the Thomas decision when it came out in 2005. In fact, they launched a successful electoral crusade to tilt the liberal court toward the conservative side. In 2008 the author of the Thomas decision, former Justice Louis Butler, lost his bid for reelection after business interests spent millions to back Michael Gableman, an obscure, conservative circuit court judge.

Grothman said Thursday that the pending lead paint cases were "filed at the last minute" to beat last year's Feb. 1 enactment of the state's "tort reform" bill, but Earle said he filed his cases before the law was even proposed, some as early as 2006.

Grothman didn't restrict his comments to the bill. He questioned the notion, which has been well-documented over decades, that paint in the home can cause lead poisoning.

"Quite frankly, it's scandalous that lawyers are leading people to believe that the lead paint in these houses is responsible for the increases in the (lead) levels in their blood," he said.

That's right. This man just turned his back on a century of research that says that lead paint is--and I understand this is a stretch here--bad for human physiology and child development.

Just take a second to drink that in.

You know, I understand that industries like buying legislators and having paid mouthpieces. But if I were looking to buy some influence in the state legislature, I'd want better shills than this.

Here's some actual evidence (other than the link provided in the Cap Times piece).  An excerpt from the "Historical setting" section of that article:

Although the audience for this journal is generally aware of the history of lead toxicity, it bears repeating from the perspective of the current debate about lead exposure standards and, indeed, exposure standards for other neurotoxicants. Lead appears to have been first discovered and mined in Turkey in 6500 BCE. Its low melting point and malleability earned it recognition for its utility even at this early stage in human history. Those properties are also the reasons for its extensive exploitation and resulting deposition in the environment. The Romans widely mined and smelted lead from 500 BCE to 300 CE, which resulted in a spike in atmospheric lead release that was not eclipsed until the industrial revolution. Greek physicians provided the first clinical description of the health effects of lead in 100 BCE.

Widespread commercial use of lead soared with the recognition that lead-based paint was both highly protective and durable. The hazardous properties of lead pigments did not go unrecognized, however (Table 3). In 1887 a U.S. medical report documented childhood lead poisoning that, in 1904, was linked to lead-based paint. European governments moved to ban lead-based paints in the early 1900s, culminating in a ban by the League of Nations in 1922. The gradual elimination of lead-based paint inventories meant that houses painted before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. Confronted by the publicity about the health hazards of lead, the paint industry aggressively promoted lead-based paint products including using children in their advertisements (Markowitz and Rosner, 2000a,b). Dismayingly, lead-based paint continues to be a major source of lead exposure in children.

So there you have it. Your Wisconsin GOP, people: Objectively pro-child poisoning.

Is that hyperbolic? Doesn't seem like it to me. This jackass just said that lead paint in houses isn't responsible for higher concentrations of lead in people's blood. He also lied about the timing of the lawsuits in question. He's a schmuck through and through. And that's what you can expect from the modern GOP--distortion and dissembling.

The only people who find Alinsky's writings radical are the Haves, because it suggests that the Have Nots have the power to equalize the system a little more. That's a scary concept for the one percent for which the GOP is entirely dedicated. But unlike former Reagan Budget Director David Stockman in the clip above, I do think this resonates with those Republican voters notorious for voting against their own interests. Because not one of them will bother to get informed on Alinsky. Not one of them will bother to do any critical thinking but simply categorize Alinsky as one of those nefarious bad things from which to be frightened or suspicious of the liberal agenda.

I don't actually think any of them will even HEAR Alinsky and be curious. I'd like to see polling done on Alinsky the way it's done on political candidates for name recognition measurement, and find out, among the Republicans who just vote Republican because their hairdresser gives them the political news, how many of them even know who the hell he is.

Listening to this, I’m struck by one thing:  if Newt is the candidate, he’s going to drive the discussion into all the nooks and crannies of noise and diversion that have occupied Fox News viewers since Obama’s victory.  In other words, Newt is the candidate of the 2009 media cycle, where the Tea Party dominated media coverage.  

Which goes back to something I've been talking about basically since 2008: NOBODY GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THIS CRAP BUT OTHER CRAZY PEOPLE. Alinsky-an community organizaing tactics and socialist death panels and all this other Glenn Beck nonsense is just noise to your average Republican. This is too advanced for them. The War on Christmas, communist re-education camps, fascist light-bulb replacement and other Tea Party articles of faith sound just as crazy to mildly racist "independent" voters as they do to us. 

Those nice white middle-class people are listening for code language, of course, but it's "school choice" and "teachers' unions" and "entitlement programs" and "parental responsibility" and "moral values" and "I don't want to have to explain this to my children." The old young bucks bying T-bone steaks thing, and why women need to have all these choices anyway. Maybe some vague intimations about how organic food is homosexual and no one should force you to eat it. A comment here or there about how Michelle Obama doesn't know her place. Unless they're the 27 percent parked in front of Fox all day, you ask any ten Republicans who Saul Alinsky is and they'll probably ask if he's an actor or an American Idol contestant.

(I didn't know who he was until Republicans started boring on about him. Because there is a limited amount of space in my head for stuff that is not, at the moment, actively on fire.) 

That's not to say that 27 percent of Americans who are bugfuck crazy is an insignificant number, but it's really not worth getting worked up about. The other 30 percent who are looking at the numbers and on average voting for the guy they think will punish black people, gay people and chicks for wanting their legal rights worry me far more.

I'm in for yet another week from h-e-double hockey sticks so I thought I'd go the quick blurb route. I also decided to pander to all the ice people out there by making a hockey reference. Guess I'm still capable of some puckishness.

The No Harbaugh Bowl Blues: I was pulling for the Harbaugh brother coached Ravens and Niners yesterday and we know how that went. I didn't watch either game but it sounded like the heartbreak of psoriasis for those who did since nobody but their own fans root for either the Foxboro Bradys or the Jersey Elis. The good news is that I can skip the Stupor Bowl this year.

NOLA Crime Report: Murder and mayhem are off to a fast start in 2012. It usually doesn't heat up until it, uh, heats up. BUT the crime on everyone's mind was the wasted Bama fan who teabagged a wasted LSU fan after the BCS Championship. I nearly made the aforementioned teabagger, Brian Downing, malaka of the week but the story moved too fast: it broke in Deadspin a week after the game and within a few days the Tide teabagger was identified and surrendered to the NOPD. He's charged with sexual battery, gross malakatude and egregious idiocy. Me, I was just relieved that it wasn't the Brian Downing who played for the ChiSox, Angels and Rangers back in the day.

One may be able to get away with murder in the Crescent City but not dragging one's microscopic sized testicles across a drunk's face. We have standards in NOLA albeit low ones...

Why Is Anyone Shocked? There's some consternation around the interwebs over Aerosmith's Steven Tyler's rendition of the national anthem before the Foxboro Bradys game. Tyler sounded like he was being strangled with one of his own scarves, which is how he *always* sounds.

Newtmentum: Finally, a political note. In the immortal words of Mitt Haircut I was delighted by his loss and Newt's win. Like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama is lucky in his enemies but who thought it would be the same enemy? Newt has been wildly unpopular for at least 15 years and only has a shot at this thing because the GOP has a bad case of rabies. It's time for Mittbot to reboot in the wake of these Newtastic developments. Btw, there's a great piece online by the author of Nixonland, Rick Perlstein, about *why* Mitt Romney became such a slippery, unprincipled douchebag: it's because his father was too candid and too principled.

Doubling Down

It wasn't enough, apparently, to call Obama the "food stamp president." Now apparently he's the unemployed ghetto crack dealer president also: 

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is apparently on the offensive after his drubbing in the South Carolina Republican primary at the hands of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich yesterday. TPM’s Benjy Sarlin is at a Romney Rally in Ormond Beach, Florida and tweets that the former Gov. said “I think it’s time we had someone in the White House who knows how to create jobs because he’s had a job.”

Most crack dealers work harder on a given Tuesday than Mitt Romney has in his entire life. I am not speaking on the basis of my extensive crack-dealer data, natch, since that grant fell through, but pretty much anybody selling a desperately desired product to customers with questionable impulse control is going to have to drink a large latte to get through the morning. 

In all seriousness, I don't know where Mitt goes from here. How much worse does it get? How much harder can he work to convince Republican voters that he's the biggest asshole? Does he have to eat a kitten alive on TV? Maybe that would resonate enough to get Romney and Newt into an episode of Top Chef where they compete to skin and portion the things the fastest.

     He claims Matthew Brandt, the owner of KK Office Solutions, sent the email threat to "All Employees" on Oct. 29, 2008 warning them "to rethink your vote on November 4th."
     Elliot Snell sued KK Office Solutions in Wyandotte County Court. The email warned that if Obama were elected, all salespeople will have to pool their sales commissions to give underachieving salespeople a "fair shake;" that hourly employees will pool their wages, including overtime, to help those who are "too busy to for overtime;" that top management was to be referred to as "the government," and would be exempt from pooling because the law doesn't apply to it; and that the last few people hired "should clean out their desks."
     The email, included in the complaint, continued: "Don't feel bad though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in hour home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress [sic], you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts ..." It concludes: "If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you many want to rethink your vote on November 4th," followed by Brandt's signature and title.
     Snell says he openly supported Obama, and was fired on Nov. 20, 2008, despite acquiring more than $300,000 in accounts during his 6 months with KK Office Solutions.
     He seeks reinstatement, lost pay and damages of $1.2 million. He is represented by Lawrence Williamson.

They talk of everything else other than the economy - national security, abortion, religion and winnability. On Vigilantism

The Crack Den had this first, and my initial response was to bang my head against the wall until it exploded: 

I’m looking for reader input on whether and when New York Times news reporters should challenge “facts” that are asserted by newsmakers they write about.

That's silly enough on its face, but the straw men erected throughout the piece are actually much worse: 

As an Op-Ed columnist, Mr. Krugman clearly has the freedom to call out what he thinks is a lie. My question for readers is: should news reporters do the same?

If so, then perhaps the next time Mr. Romney says the president has a habit of apologizing for his country, the reporter should insert a paragraph saying, more or less:

“The president has never used the word ‘apologize’ in a speech about U.S. policy or history. Any assertion that he has apologized for U.S. actions rests on a misleading interpretation of the president’s words.”

You could, in fact, just stop after that first sentence, and yes, it would be a reasonable expectation. Basically, when a candidate or anyone else in any position of power says anything that is demonstrably bullshit, your job is to demonstrate that it is bullshit. Not by yelling BULLSHIT, but by laying out the facts in contradiction to the assertion. Here on the Internet we can use the word bullshit, but you can use something along the lines of, "the candidate's actions were contradicted by X, Y and Z, and also by reality."

This message was typical of mail from some readers who, fed up with the distortions and evasions that are common in public life, look to The Times to set the record straight. They worry less about reporters imposing their judgment on what is false and what is true.

WHAT THE FUCK ELSE ARE YOU THERE FOR? I'm sorry, I don't mean to yell, but if you're not there to sort out the nonsense from the rest of the information it is time to start earning the oxygen you consume and go work in a toll booth or teach ballroom dance or undertake some other fundamentally helpful function in society. If you are not there to find things out and tell everybody, you are wasting space at a desk that someone who has not been beaten into complacency could occupy. 

The editor goes on to delineate practical considerations that basically boil down to, "everybody talks so much shit all the time that fact-checking everything would make stories unwieldy and the newspaper 500 pages long every day." To which I say, then stop covering people who lie to you all the time, the way you don't cover moon landing denialists and flat-earth conspirators. Eventually even the dumbest Republican presidential candidate will come around to the idea that if they want to get a story in the paper they'd better start pitching in the same stadium as reality's strike zone. 

But don't act like it's all just beyond you. Do your fucking job. I have ZERO patience for this IT'S JUST SO HARD MOMMY crap. This is the definition of vigilantism:

Look, nobody is ever going to come along and give you permission to uncover their deceptions and their fears. Nobody's ever going to say it's okay and yes, in fact, it is your job to make them miserable by revealing that everything they think is fine in life is actually rotting through the floorboards. Nobody's ever going to love you or thank you for stripping away all their pretty fictions.

But they are going to be better, the way we all get better when we look our lives full in the face and decide what we're going to live with and what we're going to change. They are going to be smarter and stronger and braver, once you've called a lie a lie. 

So to answer the question posed in that bludgeon of a headline, YES, I do expect the Times to be a "truth vigilante." I do think it is the Times' job (and the job of every media outlet, and every person on the planet by the way) to take matters into its own hands and determine what is right and what is wrong. I don't know who ever gave anybody the idea otherwise. What else are we DOING here? What else is the point? 

Most writers figure this out by the time they get to be working at a grown-up shop. I don't know what on earth is holding Brisbane back.

I've been having a hard time getting amped up about a Romney campaign (much like most of the Republican electorate) but that did the trick. They’ve put up a trailer for it now which you can see after the jump. It really is right out of the Swift Boat witch’s brew, the camp lighting, rumbling black clouds, the cinematography of 30 second hit ads expanded out longform.

Tim Russell, a former campaign and county aide to Gov. Scott Walker, was arrested by authorities on Thursday and charged with three theft counts as part of the ongoing John Doe investigation into Walker staffers, sources said.

Computer records show Russell was charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor count of theft. One source said the charges are tied to Operation Freedom, an annual military appreciation day held at the zoo.

In 2010, Walker's county administration had asked prosecutors to investigate what had happened to $11,000 raised in 2007 for the event. 

Russell's attorney, Michael Maistelman, could not be immediately reached for comment. 

Also charged Thursday was Brian Pierick, Russell's longtime partner. Pierick was charged with one felony count of child enticement.

In each successive revolution, the lovers of liberty threw off a bit more of the yoke of the oppressive ruling class to reestablish some vital part of our God given liberty and freedom.

Pro-life, small government, big defense Ronald Reagan set and accomplished the goal of bringing down the socialist Soviet Union as a threat to the world and reestablished free America as the dominate superpower. He rescued America from the hapless Jimmy Carter who had dragged the nation down into to the depths of despair.

And all this time I was thinking that Reagan was president in 1982.

Reagan taught us that our best years were indeed yet to come. He reinvigorated our economy by reducing government regulations and taxes and created a free market environment ripe for capitalism to flourish.

Um - the corporate giveaways and capital gains tax cuts occurred in 1981.

A lover of life and freedom, he fought off the socialists and merchants of doom and death at every turn

Nah - that was just him confusing movies he was in with reality.

and sparked the beginning of the decades long Reagan Economy. He was a champion of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and he delivered us from evil.

While sleeping at Cabinet meetings and ony waking to spin multiple plates on sticks while singing the Catalina Magdelina Hoopensteiner Wallendiner song, yes, yes, we get it.

Pro-life, small government, big defense Reaganite, Newt Gingrich, set and accomplished the major goal of wresting the congressional majority away from the socialist Democrats who had held it for forty years. His conservative Republican Revolution cut the taxes, cut the spending, cut the deficit, cut unemployment, blocked President Clinton's progressive agenda, blocked HillaryCare, reformed welfare, defended life, and balanced the budget four years running, ensuring that the Reagan Economy flourished and stretched throughout his term and beyond.

Mitt Romney set goals of protecting and sustaining abortion as safe and legal in America. He sought to be more radical than Ted Kennedy in respects to "gay rights." He swore to defend Massachusetts' strict gun-control laws that "kept us safe" and promised not to chip away at them. He set and accomplished the goal of bringing big government healthcare solutions to his state and mandating that all formerly free citizens must purchase a government approved product or suffer a tax penalty. He loves mandates against the people.

He stated that he was an independent during Reagan-Bush and he was not returning to Reagan-Bush. And he didn't. Instead, he delivered taxpayer funded abortion, gay marriage, gun-control, socialized healthcare, busted budgets, ruined economy, liberal activist judges and a destroyed Republican label.

It's funny as fuck, you bunch of losers complaining about somebody else destroying the "Republican Label".

Nice of you to admit that it's just another product with a shitty ad campaign, though.

Romney was and is demonstrably per record an anti-Reagan, pro-big government, pro-abortion, pro-gay agenda, pro-gun-control, anti-liberty, pro-socialist healthcare, mandate-loving, liberal judge appointing, budget busting progressive.

He is without a doubt the exact opposite of Reagan, Gingrich, the Reagan Revolution, the Republican Revolution and the Tea Party Revolution.

I remember a time not too long ago when Ann Coulter was welcomed at FR; there are still pictures of her with FR members somewhere back in the archives. But here she is, solidly in bed with Romney and the other northeastern RINO’s/liberals.

Whether its her love of Chris Cristie (She likes an obese person? Add their two weights together and divide by two and you have that of a normal person) or what, I don’t know. But she has abandoned conservative principles and now joins those who shun Newt and other Tea Party conservatives. Besides the above linked article, she appeared on O’Reilly’s show last night to hammer home her conversion. Which leaves Romney, whose turn it is, and who might have been electable given this absolute shitfest of an economy, but for that he's got to run in a Republican primary, and so has to amputate everything that made him remotely palatable and then cauterize the wounds. For which I supposed we should be grateful, Democrats. If Romney didn't have to out-crazy the political E Ward, we might have to worry about Obama's re-election chances.

Well I think we’re all greatly underestimating something. For the first time in my life that I can ever remember the “tax the rich” “screw them for their success” is not a just a fringe element of people anymore. What I mean by this is I don’t believe it’s just the OWS people. I think there are people you would not expect in your neighborhoods, daily lives, who secretly are angry at the rich and want them punished.

Maybe because they're underwater on their mortgages and/or are out of work, or because the banksters played roulette with their 401Ks, and the rich aren't missing any house payments?

I think there is an undercurrent out there in the country where people who have either stayed stagnant in their salaries or have had financial difficulties are blaming the wealthy for it.

In other breaking news - people who have been mugged are blaming criminals for it. Film at 11.

I’ve never seen anything like that before in America, and its awful. Point is, I think it’d be unwise for the GOP candidates, and the right overall to dismiss the class warfare angle as a singular radical left wing OWS idea. Folks, think about it... Has there been ANY positive news for the country in the past week? NO! Newt Gingrich has said a lot of stupidly outrageous things over the years but his "round up activist judges" rant is a new low. So much for separation of powers. It's only aimed at librull judges but could apply to several wingnut Supremes: come on down, Justices Scalia. Thomas and Alito.

If the Gingrich plan is ever implemented, there's a US Marshall who would be perfect other than the fact that he's fictional, sort of like Newt's whole idiotic scheme. That would be, of course, Raylan Givens of teevee's Justfied. The only flaw with *my* plan is that Raylan is apt to shoot first and ask questions later.

My first and probably last vanity.

Picture a crowd of people gathered for a political rally. The speaker gives out the old bromide "Why are we here?" The crowd replies in a frenzy. "We want change!" Is this Occupy or a college campus? No, it's Free Republic. Let's face it, we all admire our favorite candidates in the Republican field. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, don't we all. The real problem is that they're unable to differentiate themselves from each other, in a defining manner. Considering the trampling of rights, unemployment, regulation, immigration, crime, education (lack of and cost of), corruption, lack of leadership, zero (he has to come last, because he's earned it), why is one of these candidates not really able to capture our desperate imagination? Some will say Cain has done this very thing. Would the majority of them have said the same thing 2-3 months ago? I think not. I think he's a better man, than I. And I truly mean that. But I don't sense the killer instinct that is needed right now. Cain is passionate, he's just not desperate. Desperation is where too many of us living(sic).

Desperation is all right-wingers have.  Everything's a fucking crisis with you yobboes. I've been listening to this crap about how fill-in-the-blank is the most horribleist thing EVAR and will immediately cause America to go up like a piece of flash paper - for decades. Know what? Hasn't happened yet, and isn't going to happen.

But do you thimble-witted planarians remember and learn? No. You just keep bouncing from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis, because that's all you have.

We're debating between Cain, Perry, Romney, Bachmann, Santorum, Gingrigh, Paul. It's great that we have such a diverse field to choose from and we still haven't made a decision. The right's version of diversity is reality. The left's is checking a box on a form. It will take a person willing to make unlikely political decisions.The left has torn this country usunder(sic) for many a year and many a way and it has to stop. The right has to show it's(sic) teeth, and if necessary use them. We need to draft Palin. I see no other option where we win back our country from the abject corruption we see daily reported on FR. There are many on this board who consider her a fraud. I never saw that side of her. My favorite study through my life has been military history. I've read of the most narcissitic(sic) people in the world over and over, generals and politicians. Ruthless, to the max. Of all the times I've seen her on TV I've never once sensed a need for political revenge. This, to me, is standard operating procedure for a politician. Never seen it from her. I can't think of anyone whom I'm not related to that I believe in their goodness and good intentions. No person can be all things to all people (cept Jesus) and maybe she rubbed people the wrong way. Isn't that normal? I, for one, believe she was put her for a reason, to be President of the United States. I want to re-institute the draft. Just for POTUS.

Exactly. This is why I was so frustrated by the cries of “You’re a hater!” whenever anyone raised any question about Palin here.

Cor blimey, I got so sick of that.

I stopped expressing any support or otherwise for Sarah Palin a few months ago because I didn't want to be associated with some of those people in any way whatsoever.

They were (and still are, just for a different candidate now) embarrassing.

What Do They Think Goes On in Girls' Bathrooms?

Via Shakesville, this entire story is worth a read, but this type of thing kept jumping out at me in places: 

When fifth grade started, Wyatt was gone. Nicole showed up for school, sometimes wearing a dress and sporting shoulder-length hair. She began using the girls’ bathroom. Nikki’s friends didn’t have a problem with the transformation; there were playdates and sleepovers.

“They said, ‘It was about time!’ ’’ Nicole says. She was elected vice president of her class and excelled academically.

But one day a boy called her a “faggot,’’ objected to her using the girls’ bathroom, and reported the matter to his grandfather, who is his legal guardian. The grandfather complained to the Orono School Committee, with the Christian Civic League of Maine backing him. The superintendent of schools then decided Nicole should use a staff bathroom.

Last winter, Maine state representative Kenneth Fredette, a Republican from Penobscot County, sponsored a bill that would have repealed protections for transgender people in public restrooms, instead allowing schools and businesses to adopt their own policies. The bill was a response to the Maines’ 2009 lawsuit against the Orono School District.

It keeps coming back to bathrooms, and thus the conflation of "transgender" with "sexual predator." But I just have to ask what exactly Republicans envision when they think of a ladies' room?

Every girls' bathroom I've ever been in has either been a one-room thing with a lock on the door, meaning you go in and only people you allow in are in there with you, or it's got individual locking stalls so that you're not, like, looking at people peeing or anything. Outside the stalls we often do secret sexy things like wash our hands and put on lipstick, things many women do in the presence of a penis on a regular basis without the world fucking ending. So what is the deal? What is going to happen that is some kind of violation? 

Yes, in men's rooms there are urinals, but I have yet to see a horrible panic in Congress about female to male transgender folks invading the guys' shitter. It's always the poor helpless chickadees who need protection from the presence of a Seekrit Dude. And if peen is the issue, where is the worry about women who bring their 12-year-old boys in there with them because Junior can't be out of mommy's sight for ten seconds, not even to pee? That makes me far more uncomfortable than wondering what kind of equipment the woman the next stall over was born with. 

Is this some kind of fixation you get from watching too much repressive porn, or something? Where you think it's a nonstop lesbian orgy in there, or it's some kind of secret world where we're all taking off our bras and dancing to Enya? I'm not in a public bathroom for a second longer than I have to be, because a) gross, almost always and b) better things to do. It's not a hangout. 

Unless you're a family-values conservative trolling for some airport beejers, I guess.

This is an insult to cheese lovers everywhere. It could inspire someone to throw a block of cheese at his Iowa HQ windows. What kind of cheese? Brick...
